Large centrifugal compressor

The Large Centrifugal Compressor Test Rig is a versatile platform for the investigation of industrial radial compressors. Thanks to its modular design, it allows flexible adaptation to various research requirements, including the analysis of pressure ratios and flow phenomena.

Description

Areas of application

  • Geometry variations: Investigation of inlet and outlet guide geometries as well as internal, external, and asymmetrical spiral geometries

  • Flow analysis: Flexible use of optical measurement techniques such as L2F and PIV for precise flow investigations

  • Investigation variations: Adaptation to various impellers, diffuser variants, and inlet guide vanes

Technical setup and operation

  • Modular design: The test rig consists of a single-stage centrifugal compressor whose geometry can be configured for various investigations

  • Closed-loop operation: Operation with reduced energy consumption through negative pressure at the compressor inlet

  • Functionality: Air is drawn in, stabilized in the settling chamber, guided through inlet guide vanes, and then compressed in the radial compressor impeller and diffuser

  • Efficiency improvement: Recirculation of air through a heat exchanger in closed-loop operation to optimize energy efficiency

Applied measurement technology

  • Pressure and temperature measurement: Precise measurement systems with Type K thermocouples and PT100 sensors

  • Flow analysis: CTA/CCA probes, PIV, and L2F for investigating flow velocities and turbulence

  • Vibration monitoring: Torque measurement shaft and acceleration sensors
