MOOC Aircraft Engines

The module introduces basic engineering and physical understanding of the requirements, components and preliminary design of simple aircraft jet engines. After successful completion of the course, the students have knowledge of the thermodynamic changes of state taking place in the individual components of aircraft jet engines and are able to apply this knowledge to the calculation of the engine efficiency, the optimisation of the thermodynamic cycle and also stage theory and straight cascades. Furthermore, the students gain insight into phenomena such as rotating stall, surging, and engine aeroacoustics as well as the dynamic behaviour of jet engines and their control systems. Moreover, the students are able to determine and evaluate the losses, dimensionless quantities, and characteristic maps of aircraft jet engines and their individual components.
