We offer our know-how within the framework of analytical, experimental and numerical engineering services for a wide range of applications. We develop the optimal result for you through individual solution concepts, the use of efficient process chains and close coordination with the client. Cost-efficient and market-oriented solutions on a high technological standard are our goal. Your knowledge, your know-how and the results developed for you are treated with the strictest confidentiality and, if desired, protected by non-disclosure agreements.
The offered engineering services are divided into Consulting, Simulation, Design/Optimization, Order Measurement and Custom Manufacturing.
-
Consulting
TFD can assist and advise on many issues in fluid mechanics, fluid-structure interaction, and aeroacoustics. A selection of possible uses is:
- Pressure loss optimization
- Aerodynamics Evaluation of flow processes
- Design and analysis of turbomachinery
- Building aerodynamics
- Ventilation engineering
- Cooling Data analysis and trend evaluation
- Supply systems for fuel cells
-
Simulation
Our institute has versatile experience in performing numerical simulations with strength and fluid mechanics issues. A variety of commercial and non-commercial software packages are used for this purpose, depending on your needs. The complete processing chain from component measurement, preparation of CAD geometries, discretization, simulation and evaluation can be run through. Typical uses are:
- Numerical flow simulations (CFD)
- Pressure drop optimization of piping, inflow geometries, etc.
- Evaluation of the uniformity of air flows (e.g. in cooling processes)
- Evaluation and optimization of aerodynamics of flowed around bodies
- Performance map calculations of turbomachinery (axial and centrifugal compressors, axial and centrifugal turbines, fans, etc.)
- Mixing processes Fluid-structure interaction (FSI)
- Numerical strength calculation using Finite Element Method (FEM)
- Acoustic and aeroelastic simulation Wind turbines
-
Design optimization
Our institute has extensive experience in the design and optimization of flow components and entire turbomachinery. The exemplary procedure for a design process and the available design tools are described under the following link. Work carried out so far includes e.g.:
- Fan
- Centrifugal and axial compressors
- Radial and axial turbines
- Pre-guiding grids
- Spirals
- Diffusers
-
Order measurements
At the TFD, various test rigs are available for the experimental testing of turbomachinery and flow-conducting components. At the same time, a wide range of measurement techniques is available to perform detailed local measurements in addition to global flow variables. TFD offers both contract measurements in-house and contract measurements with additional measurement technology off-site. Investigations carried out so far include e.g.:
- Turbocharger
- Valves
- Centrifugal compressors
- Air flows in buildings
- Pipe components
- Pressure loss measurements on/in different technical plants
- Optical deformation measurements e.g. on wind turbines (DIC)
- Vibration measurements
- Measurements of blade vibrations by means of tip timing system
- Acoustic measurements
- Calibration of pneumatic and thermal probes
- Laser-based optical flow field measurement (Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV))
- Visualization of flows on surfaces/objects (color paint images)
-
Custom Manufacturing
The institute's own workshop has manual and CNC-controlled turning, milling and grinding machines, up to the 5-axis CNC machining center. Especially complex single part productions and small series can be manufactured by the TFD. Self-trained and professionally experienced precision mechanics build your flow measurement probe or instrument your test stand components. Typical components are:
- Turned and milled parts
- Compressor and turbine blades
- Preparation of show parts
- Instrumentation of components
- Construction of pneumatic probes
- Repair and calibration of hot-wire probes
